This is a Banff photography workshop with a difference! The adventure begins in Banff at sunrise photographing the iconic Mount Rundle and Vermilion Lakes, and ends with sunset in the wild and remote Kootenay Plains at world-renowned Abraham Lake. We'll stop along the Bow Valley Parkway and Icefields Parkway to capture its stunning scenery before reaching our final destination. Far off the beaten tourist track, the incredible frozen wonderland of Abraham Lakes methane bubbles and ice formations are not to be missed.
Although photographers of any skill level are welcome, this workshop is perfect for more intermediate and advanced photographers. Photography locations may involve a short hike through snow. Participants should be prepared for this and the below freezing temperatures of this winter workshop. All you need is warm clothing and a willingness to get outside in the winter to learn the art of winter landscape photography.Although anyone who loves winter are welcome on this tour, we find that it is perfect for the avid photographer who wishes to learn more complex landscape photography techniques. We suggest having a wide angle lens such as a 10mm for cropped sensors and 16mm for full frame cameras in order to capture the depth and scale of Banff and Abraham Lake.
Everyone who joins Rocky Mountain Photo Adventures on a group tour must pay. Alternatively, if someone would like to join but not participate in the photography, we have private guided tours where we do not charge a fee for a tag along. Please see details here
Fortunately, Banff National Park and Abraham Lake have excellent landscape photography opportunities very close to where we will park the tour van. We don't need to hike very far to get amazing landscape images! Please keep in mind that accessing Abraham Lake has many walking hazards including, uneven ground, slippery ice and snow drifts. We provide ice cleats for everyone.
No worries! We have tripods available for you to use during the session if you wish to use one. Although we highly recommend using a tripod, it is not necessary. If you are curious about how to best use a tripod, our photography guides can help you set up your tripod and instruct on how to best utilize one.
We want to make sure we are at our first location with enough time for you to get set up and be ready to photograph the sun rising. Sunrise is the most spectacular time to photograph in Banff and we don't want you to miss it!
We sure do! While we recommend you have a bite to eat before your pick up, we always have hot drinks and snack bars available. On this tour, we provide a hot lunch prepared by Canmore’s The Sensory restaurant. You’re also welcome to bring along nibblies should you feel you’ll need some extra fuel for this full day itinerary.
- Please note, at this time we are only offering a vegetarian hot lunch and are unable to accommodate specific dietary needs.
The Canadian Rockies is cold in winter. Be prepared for subzero temperatures that can feel like -20 degrees celsius or colder with the windchill. Factor in our start and finish times and you’ve got some potentially frigid temperatures. While we’ll have hand warmers, hot drinks and a hot lunch to help warm you up, you’ll need to dress for the weather. Wear base layers (including warm socks), a warm coat, snow pants, winter boots and be sure to bring your toque and gloves. Our van is nice and warm so you’ll have plenty of time to defrost between photo locations.

Canmore Pick up: 6:30 AM *approx. depending on the hotel, town and date of the tour. Exact pickup times will be confirmed the day before your trip. Return: 7:30 PM

Did the Abraham Lake & Banff Winter Workshop and had an outstanding day. Mark and his team are very knowledgeable of the area and adjust to the existing light and weather conditions. They were very helpful and available to improve the skills of everyone in the group - I learned lots.
Abraham Lake was outstanding, a must if you are in the area in Winter.
