What is a private guided landscape photography workshop?
Our private guided landscape photography tours with Mark Unrau are one-on-one workshops where Mark will pick you up from your hotel and take you out to photograph and learn how to strengthen your photography at different landscape locations throughout Banff National Park and the Canadian Rockies.
I'm a total beginner to Photography. Is that OK?
Absolutely! As long as you are passionate about photography, Mark loves helping people of any skill level from absolute beginner to professional. Mark's approachable style and easy going personality will help you to get great landscape images that you will be proud to show off to friends and family for years to come.
Does photography instruction have to be included?
You may be an already accomplished photographer or maybe someone who just want's to get to the best spots at the right time because you don't have a lot of time in Banff National Park. We totally understand this, but because of Mark's extensive experience in photography, he finds the best value can be gained when you are open to learning during the session.
Will we be doing lots of hiking?
Fortunately, Banff National Park has the best landscape photography opportunities very close to where we will park. We do not need to hike very far from the tour van to get amazing landscape images! However, depending on the location we can travel up to 2 Km from the road.
Do you have landscape locations that are off the beaten track?
This is always the most difficult question to answer. It really depends on what you mean by off the beaten track. Many of the best and most iconic landscapes in Banff are easily accessed. Because of this it of course attracts many other photographers, so there is a good chance we might see some other keen people where we will be going. There are some places that are not as visited outside of the National Parks and we are happy to go to these locations, but they do take longer to get to and may not be appropriate during the short time we have together.
When do you typically start your sessions?
We want to make sure we are at our first location with enough time for you to get set up and be ready to photograph sunrise. Sunrise is the most spectacular time to photograph in Banff and we don't want you to miss it!
What does a private workshop with Mark typically include?
Mark will come and pick you up around an hour and a half before sunrise depending on where you are staying and what location you will be going to first.
What kind of camera equipment do I need?
Mark works with any kind of camera from medium format to an iPhone. So whatever gear you have you will learn how to make better pictures with it. As they say, "The best camera is the one you have"
What kind of things will I learn during our private workshop?
Each session is custom made to what skill level you are and what kind of camera gear you will have. The most important concept that Mark goes over is composition. At the beginning of the session, Mark will asses your level of knowledge and go over concepts and techniques that will help you improve your photography. Some of the things Mark is happy to go over is:
- Simplifying your approach to finding an amazing landscape composition.
- Steps to simplify and master exposure for that perfect shot no matter what the lighting conditions are.
- Learn how to photograph shooting towards the sun and get amazing colour.
- The easiest and most effective way to use filters to improve the exposure and quality of your landscape images.
What should I wear on this workshop?
The Canadian Rockies is a fairly arid climate at a high altitude. Because of this, even in summer it can be quite chilly first thing in the morning. Here are some recommendations:
- Warm sweater
- Hiking shoes with sturdy sole and tread (waterproof are ideal like Gortex)
- Spring Jacket/Rain coat
When is Mark available for a private workshop?
Mark is available year round. Just fill out our request form and he will get back to you and let you know if he is available. If Mark is already booked for a workshop with someone else, we do have Maxim and Nick available.

I decided to kick off my trip with a personal photo session with Mark. It was a wonderful morning and I learned a ton. What was even better was before my trip Mark helped me pick our the right camera and I was in the market to buy. He taught me how to use my new equipment and snag every shot I was hoping to capture while in the mountains. He was so friendly and our entire morning together was just a lot of fun. Mark has travelled all over the world and it was so nice to converse with him about his adventures and exchange stories. I'm pretty into social media so Mark even helped me process and share the perfect image. All in one morning with RM Photo Adventures I learned how to use my new camera, snap the perfect shot, edit it and share it with family and friends by the time I got home. Learning to mask two photos for one final image was fascinating and made for the perfect print for my home. If I could I'd take Mark, his talent and photo and life insights on all my trips from now on, I would! Time spent with Rock Mountain Photos Adventures is irreplaceable.
Knowing the amazing photogenic places in Banff area I was looking for an instructor to help me to reveal the beauty of the surrounding nature using the photography. Doing my research on internet I have ended up on finding Rocky Mountain Photo Adventures and Mark. Coming from France with different knowledges in photography my husband and I spent 5 days private guiding session with Mark. For this awesome experience, we would like to highlight the competence of Mark and his great professionalism and sense of service. We, my husband and I, have learned so much. The post-processing lessons were also very informative. Everything was great and above all the effort provided by Mark to allow us to have the best photos in fonction of the spot location and the surrounding elements of the landscape independently of our photography skills and the moment of the day. Simply, we spent such a good time with Mark in incredible spots. Mark has changed our way to do photography to better reveal the natural beauty. We would definitely recommend Mark and Rocky Mountain Photo Adventures to anyone who loves photography, at any skill level.
